M18 Hellcat in 1/72...

...a new release from Armourfast Models

My thanks to my long time friend, Jason Lake, for contributing this review for Military Model Scene.

The Armourfast M18 Hellcat, kit no, 99034, comes in their recognizable boxing, containing two sprues for two complete M-18’s.  Designed with the wargamer in mind these models are quick to build giving a good representation of a Hellcat but without lots of bits that can be knocked off.

With only twenty parts to be assembled, the build for one of these, straight out of the box can be achieved in about twenty minutes, cutting parts off the sprue and then sanding/cutting off the remaining stub leaving a smooth surface ready for glue.  The whole process to build 2 Hellcats from start to finish was achieved in just under one hour, following the build instructions which are printed on the back of box.

If additional detail is required by the individual modeler then a company called “Early War Miniatures” make add on packs to use with the Armourfast range including tank crews and stowage.  Alternatively, you may have suitable parts in your ‘spares box’.

Once happy with the overall look of the model the tanks were then sprayed with some Lifecolour Olive Drab and Bronze Green. Using Lifecolour pigment washes I give the engine grills and various details a wash to pick out the details.  After picking out the tyre rubber using Lifecolour paint once more, the machine gun was done using Darkstar metallic colour.  I then mixed various earth pigment powders and applied these to the lower hull and wheels, fixing this with some Tamiya thinner.

No transfers are included in the kit, so for the Allied Stars etc you need to look in your spares box once more.  I am pleased with these models and look forward to any future releases as and when they become available.

Please contact Armourfast for details of your local stockiest and availability.
