German Schwerer Plattformwagen Type SSYMS 80 in 1/72...

...a kit from Model Collect

Another new 1/72 kit from ModelCollect and one which builds up neatly.  The German railway system in WW2 made good use of railways to transport units across Europe. In particular they reduced the wear and tear of long road journeys on the track and mechanicals of any AFV. As the war went on, so AFVs such as the Tiger I & II needed a wagon capable of carrying the heavier weights. The only issue they still faced was the width of infrastructure such as tunnels, and hence the Tiger I and II needed to have the combat tracks replaced by 'transport' tracks and have the external track guards removed.

Modelcollect have now done a neat and straightforward model of this 80ton capacity wagon which builds up easily. It's not a complex build. The wagon is effectively two identical halves, so parts are provided on 2 sprues, with the three axle bogie, buffers and half of the wooden deck and then a duplicate set of sprues, so a total of 4, two of each one. The really simple item comes with the rail and sleepers, as these are moulded in just the two section which fit together very neatly. There are of course transfers included as well.

I have mine built and just the basic coat of paint on so far.  The wheels and rails need to be done and then weathering applied to it all. The next task will be to decide what AFV I might mount on it eventually.

I bought mine via the UK importer, Tiger Hobbies.
