African War Elephants in 28mm scale...

...the new release from Victrix

A new set of injection moulded African War Elephants for your Ancient Wargames armies from Victrix are now on sale.  Having had a look at them I found this not just an interesting subject, but really nicely done in plastic mouldings.  What you get are a total of 4 sprues in the pack.  The elephant and the Howdah are all on one sprue, and you get two copies of the sprue.  Each one has three elephant halves.  One right half body and a choice of two left half bodies.  Hence over the two sprues you can make the two elephants in slightly different stances and with two alternative trunk positions as well.  Then there is the sprue with the figures, and again there are two copies of the same sprue.  Choose whether you want them to be Carthaginian, Ptolomeic, Numidian or Roman.  I went for one Carthaginian crew and the other Roman.  You get a choice of different arms and heads plus you end up with 6 complete spare figures for use as you like.

Nicely moulded and easy enough to assemble.  I found the fit of parts to be excellent.  The only thing you need to deal with are the moulding seams on the parts when you have removed them from the sprues.  To select the right parts for the different figure types, the guide is provided printed on the back of the header card.

A nice neat accessory worth getting as well are the transfers for the Howdah, blankets and shields which are available as different sets from Little Big Men Studios.

Details of the pack are-

  • 2 elephants and 14 crew in each set.

  • Very highly detailed figures with superb detail achieved by digital sculpting.

  • Crew options for Carthaginian, Ptolomeic, Numidian and Roman.

  • Elephants have separate left halves, optional trunks, neck bells, javelin cases and decorative ribbons offering many model choices.

  • Mahut has head and arm options adding much variety.

  • All crews have multiple head, arm and weapon options.

  • Great value at £29.95, cheaper than metal sets with much more detail.

  • Full range of LittleBigMenStudios shield, howdah and blanket transfers available.

So far I have painted the 2 elephants and fitted the Little Big Man Studios transfers.  These are a little unusual as they need to be individually cut and a clear plastic cover sheet removed to reveal a sticky side.  Carefully put them in place (so apparently upside down) and rub them down to fix in place.  That leaves them covered with the white paper backing sheet.  Apply water to them (I used a cotton bud) and this quickly soaks the backing sheet, which slides off to reveal the colourful transfer in place.

Next job is to paint the figures...

Thanks to Victrix for the news and pictures
