Greek Light Cavalry in 28mm scale...

...a new release from Victrix

A new set of injection moulded 28mm Ancients, this time a pack of 12 horses and riders for Greek Light Cavalry.  In the back you get six sprues in total, 3 with horses and 3 with figure parts and one horse.  There are 4 basic rider figures on each sprue, while you can get a real mix/variation between them thanks to a number of optional heads and helmet styles as well as optional arms with different weapons.  So you get a total of 12 horses and riders and very nicely detailed they all are.  On the back of the header card is a guide listing the individual part identification and which ones can go with which figure according to what unit you want.

As Victrix list, the variations are nicely thought out.  You get -

  • Light unarmoured cavalry armed with javelins and swords.

  • Separate heads allowing multiple variants

  • Choice of arms for javelins, spears, swords, a musician and a standard bearer.

  • Mix of optional round shields

  • Can be used as Greek Light Cavalry against the Romans and Persians

  • Can be used as Persian mercenary cavalry

  • Can be used as mercenaries in a Carthaginian army.

  • Add shields to convert them into Tarantine cavalry,

  • Can be used as Macedonian light cavalry in an Alexander the Great army.

The parts do need checking just for mould seam lines when you take them off the sprue, and file these down.  The parts fit nicely and I've assembled one set of four figures/horses and found the parts fitted well and left you a lot of spare parts which are well worth keeping in a spares box as they could come in handy to create even more variation in  with additional sets.  The figures are designed by computer and I must say I think that they are not only nicely proportioned, but the detail on them is equally nicely done.

Next job is to build some of the other figures and then paint the figures/horses and to find some transfers for the shields...

Thanks to Victrix for the sample sprues.
