Number 18 in the excellent 'Camera On' series from MMP Books and author Alan Ranger. As with ealier titles in the series, these are a marvellous collection of archive images, but taken from collections of veterans, rather than those of national archive collections whihc have been seen quite regularly. So, what we have here are a selection of images of which very few have been published before.
In this new addition to the range we get a detailed look at the small Wurzburg radars, commonly used by German Flak units. Quite small and mobile pieces, these are very small compared to the well known Giant Wurzburgs which were on permanent sites and so often targeted by the RAF. As well as the radar dishes themselves, which come in a mix of versions, there are other bits of equipment used by German Flak units, including Rangefinders and two different trailer mounted generators, the large 24kVA and the smaller 8kVA types. A couple of other bits of kit which are featured are 200cm, 150cm and 60cm searchlights and the archaic looking RRH (Ringtrichter Rightungshorer Horchgerat), a sound location device. Outdated compared to radar, but kept going because it couldn't be 'jammed'or 'spoofed' in the same way. With mobile yet semi-permanent sites for these equipments, additional items like wooden platforms made to assist the crews in operating the sets. Alongside them are the visual rangefinders along with the generators that supported their operations.
As well as the WW2 historian, modellers in particular will like this one, as there are kits of some of these pieces available as kits in either large or small scales and this will be a great help in seeing how they were actually set up in action. Another great collection of images that I am sure will be popular.
